When you incorporate vitamin C into your skincare routine, it’ll do your skin wonders. Read on to learn more about vitamin C!

VITAMIN C? WHAT’S THAT?

While we are familiar with vitamin C in our diets and supplements, it can also be found in citrus fruits such as oranges (which are known to be rich in vitamin C) and vegetables. Its vital function to our body includes working as an essential nutrient in tissue repair and promotes collagen production. It’s no doubt that vitamin C is a healthy intake, however, your skin can also reap amazing benefits when applied topically.

A powerhouse antioxidant that helps brighten your skin, fade dark spots, prevent free radical damage caused by UV exposure and smooth fine lines; vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid & L-Ascorbic Acid) will be the solution to your skin problems! Even people with dull skin, uneven skin tones and aging skin can use vitamin C to rejuvenate their skin back to life.

BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is known for its impressive benefits in skincare products. Let’s see what’s the commotion about!

(1) Brighten skin

  • Other than brightening your skin, vitamin C helps fade pigmentation and smooth your skin to lessen the dullness.

  • (2) Fade hyperpigmentation

  • Helpful in decreasing and lightening unwanted brown and discoloration by blocking the passage of pigment synthesis.

  • Vitamin C slows down melanin production. Dark spots will fade and you can achieve an even-toned complexion.

  • (3) Increase skin collagen

  • Important for collagen synthesis.

  • Vitamin C helps build collagen.

  • (4) Protect skin

  • Vitamin C protects your skin from environmental stressors such as ultraviolet light and pollution, as well as free radicals that contribute to cancer, skin dullness, damaged cells and wrinkles.

  • It also soothes sunburns and wound healing.

  • (5) It’s hydrating!

  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a vitamin C derivative, has a hydrating effect on the skin.

  • Your skin moisture will be better, thanks to the decrease in transepidermal water loss.

  • Under-eye circles can be solved with vitamin C.

  • (6) It’s safe!

  • Vitamin C is safe for most skin types. However, in rare cases, people with hypersensitive skin may experience skin irritation.

  • (7) Reduce redness & even out skin tone

  • A variety of inflammatory skin conditions can be solved by using vitamin C.

  • To get an even complexion, you can apply vitamin C to minimize the redness on your face.

  • DO’S AND DON’TS!

When it comes to mixing/using vitamin C with other ingredients, there are several that you should look out for. Some ingredients complement well with vitamin C, and some ingredients don’t.

    1)Work well with:

  • Antioxidants like Ferulic Acid and Vitamin E will increase the efficacy and stability of the molecule, brighten skin, protect against free radical damage and most importantly, is anti-aging.

  • Work well with Hyaluronic Acid and vitamin B.

  • You can use vitamin C daily or every other day.

  • 2) Don’t work well with:

  • Avoid using Benzoyl Peroxide with vitamin C, as it will oxidize the vitamin C (which is useless to use).

  • Avoid using it daily with other acids as it may cause excessive skin irritation.

  • Avoid using it with Niacinamide/Retinol as it will make it more unstable and harder to penetrate the skin (if you want to use both, wait for ½ an hour before applying it).

  • If you notice any discoloration (brown color) or sour smell, please check the vitamin C product’s expiry date to avoid unwanted problems. You are recommended to throw away and replace it with a new bottle.

Vitamin C is very reactive and oxidizes easily, thus you should use vitamin C products that are packed in air-tight and opaque packages. Don’t forget to store it in a dark and cool environment.

    HOW TO USE IT?

While many argue when is the most suitable time to use vitamin C, what’s most important is consistency! To get a beautiful, glowing and healthy skin, use vitamin C as a serum in the morning. After washing your face with your favourite cleanser, you may apply vitamin C onto your skin. Vitamin C serums are more effective at penetrating your skin barrier compare to a cream or toner. You may use vitamin C during the night too.

Once you finish applying it to your skin, finish it off with a moisturizer and sunscreen. Usually, vitamin C takes a little longer to show results (even if you use it daily). You won’t notice any changes in your skin for 6-8 weeks, so be patient!

Remember! If you have sensitive skin, seek a board-certified dermatologist or do a skin test first, as it contains high acidity and this can be irritating to your skin.

    VITAMINS IN SKINCARE PRODUCTS

You can find vitamin C in skin care products such as moisturizers, toners and serums. But vitamin C is typically found in targeted treatments or serums.

    1) A lightweight liquid (15% Vitamin C) booster is ideal for layering, especially if you have a dull or uneven skin tone.

    2) A richer-textured (25% Vitamin C) treatment works well for skin that experiences discoloration and dullness, especially if dark spots are your main concern.

3)Leave-on products such as moisturizers, eye creams and serums that contain a lower concentration of vitamin C are good for your skin. Concentrations as low as 0.6% provide anti-aging and antioxidants.

You can also find vitamin C in skin care products such as RehLa Halal Skincare Set & RehLa Halal Body Set! The products are formulated using mainly pineapple extract (Bromelain) which is very rich in vitamin C! Not to forget, the product also contains natural oils. This is to keep your body and skin healthy.

    WHO SHOULD USE IT?

It is not recommended for those that have oily and sensitive skin, as it can be problematic. If in doubt, seek a board-certified dermatologist to know which product suits best for your skin.

The key to maintaining glowing and healthy skin is by incorporating vitamin C into your skincare routine! Using skin care products such as serums and other topical products is two of the many ways to appreciate its impressive benefits. With consistency and patience, you’ll achieve your dream skin!
